Frequently Asked Questions

What does a preamplifier do?

A preamplifier selects your source, controls volume, and sends a clean line-level signal to a power amplifier. In a separates system it's the control center; paired with a power amp it does the job an integrated amplifier does in one box.

Do I need a separate preamp and power amp?

Not for most systems — an integrated amplifier is simpler and often better value. Separates make sense when you want the ultimate performance, more flexibility, or the ability to upgrade the preamp and power amp independently.

What's the difference between a preamp and an integrated amplifier?

An integrated combines the preamp and power amp in one chassis. A standalone preamp has no power amplification — it must feed a separate power amp. Choose separates for maximum performance and upgrade flexibility, an integrated for simplicity and value.

Do I need a phono stage in my preamp?

Only if you play vinyl and don't already have a phono stage elsewhere. Some preamps include a built-in phono input for MM and/or MC cartridges; if yours doesn't, you'll add an external phono preamp for a turntable.

Tube vs. solid-state preamp — what's the difference?

Tube preamps are prized for a rich, dimensional midrange and are often described as more organic. Solid-state preamps are typically quieter, lower-maintenance, and very neutral. Both can be excellent; it comes down to system matching and taste.
