Frequently Asked Questions

What does a power amplifier do?

A power amplifier takes the line-level signal from a preamplifier or streamer and amplifies it enough to drive your loudspeakers. It supplies the current your speakers need to play loud and stay in control; it doesn't select sources or set volume — that's the preamp's job.

Do I need a preamp with a power amplifier?

Yes, in some form. A power amp needs a source of volume control — a preamplifier, an integrated amp's pre-out, or a streamer/DAC with a variable (digital preamp) output. Without one you have no way to set the level.

How much power do I need?

It depends on your speakers' sensitivity and room size. Efficient speakers in a small room need only modest power; low-sensitivity speakers or large rooms want 100+ watts with strong current delivery. We list verified specs on every model and can match an amp to your speakers.

What are monoblocks, and are they better?

Monoblocks are single-channel power amps — one per speaker. They isolate the channels for better separation and can sit near each speaker for short cable runs. They aren't automatically better than a good stereo amp, but at higher performance levels they're a common step up.

Class A, Class AB, or Class D for a power amp?

Class A is the purest and runs hot; Class AB balances clean sound with efficiency; Class D is efficient, cool, and compact, and modern designs sound excellent. Implementation matters more than the class label — we can point you to strong examples of each.

Can I hear a power amp with my speakers first?

Yes. All Elite Audio has a showroom at 1921 York Rd, Suite 1, Timonium, MD 21093 for demos. Call (443) 402-5055 to arrange one.
