McIntosh MC240 Stereo Tube Power Amplifier (Used) – Vintage

This unit was professionally evaluated and serviced by Audio Classics in 2022. The MC240 was manufactured by McIntosh Laboratory in Binghamton, New York between 1960 and 1969 and holds the distinction of being McIntosh's very first stereo amplifier — a landmark product in American audio history and one of the most collectible and sought-after vintage tube amplifiers in the world.

The MC240 houses two complete 40-watt power amplifiers on a single chrome and black chassis, delivering 40 watts per channel into 4, 8, 16, 125, or 600-ohm loads in stereo mode — or 80 watts into a single channel in bridged mono mode — with less than 0.5% total harmonic distortion from 20Hz to 20kHz at full rated power. This distortion specification, measured at full power across the entire audio band, remains extraordinary by any standard and is simply not matched by most tube amplifiers produced today. McIntosh's Unity Coupled output transformer — the heart of every McIntosh amplifier of this era — is what makes this possible, providing an exceptionally flat frequency response from 16Hz to 40kHz and allowing the amplifier to drive virtually any speaker load with equal authority and composure.

The flexibility of the MC240 extends beyond stereo and mono operation — it can also be configured as two completely independent 40-watt amplifiers driving entirely separate program sources, or as a biamplification solution with an electronic crossover. Each channel has its own RCA input jack and level control, with a separate balanced input option also provided. The iconic glowing tube complement, chrome chassis, and illuminated McIntosh nameplate make the MC240 as visually striking today as it was over half a century ago.
