The Spendor Classic 100 at a glance
The Spendor Classic 100 is one of the most ambitious standmount loudspeakers Spendor makes. Where most stand mounted designs settle for a two way arrangement, the Classic 100 is a full three way, pairing a substantial 300 mm bass and mid driver with a dedicated 180 mm midrange unit and a 22 mm soft dome tweeter. That configuration lets it reach down to 32 Hz and up to 25 kHz, a bandwidth you would normally associate with a floorstander, delivered from a compact cabinet that sits on a stand.
Spendor is a British company, founded in 1969 and still hand building its loudspeakers in Hailsham, England. The Classic line carries the BBC monitoring heritage forward, and the Classic 100 is very much a flagship expression of that thinking in stand mount form.
The BBC derived design and technology
The heart of the Classic line is the thin-wall, lightly damped enclosure. Rather than trying to build the stiffest, most inert box possible, this BBC derived approach uses a thinner wall that is carefully damped so cabinet resonances are moved out of the critical midrange and controlled rather than fought. The result is a cabinet that gives voices and instruments a natural, uncoloured quality through the midband. In the Classic 100 that philosophy is applied to a large 630 x 355 x 365 mm enclosure weighing 23.5 kg per speaker, so there is real internal volume behind that big bass and mid driver.
The three way layout matters here. By handing midrange duties to a dedicated 180 mm driver, the large 300 mm unit is free to focus on low frequency authority and lower mid weight, while the soft dome tweeter takes over on top. That division of labour is a large part of why the Classic 100 can sound both effortless and articulate at once.
The Classic line is also voiced to be softer and more valve friendly than Spendor's more contemporary ranges. If you are drawn to the EP77 polymer cone drivers, LPZ tweeter and Dynamic Damping cabinets found on the A-line and D-line, those are a different, more modern engineering path. The Classic 100 instead prioritises the classic BBC voicing and tonal ease.
Sound character
With a sensitivity of 90 dB and a nominal 8 ohm impedance, the Classic 100 is an approachable load that does not demand enormous power to come alive. Its character is generous and unforced. The midrange is its calling card: vocals, strings and acoustic instruments arrive with body and a lifelike sense of tone. The large bass and mid driver gives the low end weight and a physical foundation that few standmounts manage, while the thin-wall cabinet keeps the presentation open rather than boxy.
This is a loudspeaker that rewards long listening sessions. It is not about clinical dissection so much as musical flow and a natural, room filling scale.
Where it sits in the Classic range
The Classic line spans from compact designs up to the Classic 100. If your room or listening habits are more modest, the Spendor Classic 4/5 and Spendor Classic 3/1 offer the same family voicing in smaller enclosures, and the Spendor Classic 2/3 and Spendor Classic 1/2 step up in scale and bandwidth. The Classic 100 sits at the top of the stand mount hierarchy, offering the fullest low end reach and the three way driver complement.

Because the Classic 100 accepts anywhere from 25 to 200 watts and presents a friendly 8 ohm load, it partners happily with a wide range of quality integrated amplifiers.
Amplification
For a rich, refined pairing that suits the Classic voicing, the Luxman L-507Z Integrated Amplifier is a natural match, offering finesse and control in equal measure. If you want to lean into the warm, valve adjacent character of the Classic line with pure Class A power, the Luxman L-100 CENTENNIAL Pure Class A Integrated Amplifier is a lovely companion. The Accuphase E-3000 Stereo Integrated Amplifier brings a smooth, composed presentation, while the Yamaha A-S3200 Integrated Amplifier pairs muscular delivery with excellent build.
If you prefer separates, the Yamaha M-5000 Power Amplifier gives the Classic 100 firm grip and headroom, driven from a suitable preamplifier or streaming preamp.
