How to Build a MoFi Electronics System: A Complete Buying Guide

Two Sides of MoFi Electronics

MoFi Electronics is the hardware division of Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, the storied American audiophile label. Where the parent company is known for meticulously mastered records, MoFi Electronics builds the gear that plays them beautifully. As an authorized MoFi dealer, AEA sees the line as two complementary halves. On one side sits a complete analog front end: belt-drive turntables, a moving magnet cartridge, and phono stages. On the other sits the SourcePoint loudspeaker family designed by Andrew Jones. This guide walks you through both, so you can build a system that suits your room, your library, and the way you like to listen.

The Analog Front End: How a Record Plays

A turntable does not make sound on its own. To hear music from vinyl you need three parts working together: the turntable, a cartridge, and a phono stage. The turntable spins the record and holds the tonearm steady. The cartridge, mounted at the end of the tonearm, reads the groove and converts the tiny mechanical vibrations into an electrical signal. That signal is very small and needs specialized amplification and equalization, which is where the phono stage comes in. Only after the phono stage does the signal reach your main amplifier at a level it can use.

The Turntables

MoFi turntables are belt-drive designs built around Delrin or Delrin-coated platters and precision tonearms, using gimbal or dual-pivot bearing designs depending on the model. Belt drive helps isolate the platter from motor noise, and the dense Delrin platter is chosen to control resonance for a quiet, stable playback surface.

The MoFi UltraDeck is a wonderful entry into the range and a natural first step for many listeners building a serious analog rig. The MoFi PrecisionDeck Fender brings the PrecisionDeck engineering together with distinctive Fender inspired styling, a lovely choice for the music lover who wants a statement piece. At the top sits the MoFi MasterDeck, the reference expression of MoFi turntable design for the listener who wants the most resolving front end in the line.

One important note: some MoFi decks ship without a cartridge, so do not assume one is included. Always confirm what is in the box, and plan for a cartridge as part of your budget.

The MasterTracker Cartridge

The MoFi MasterTracker is the flagship of MoFi's moving magnet cartridge line. Moving magnet designs are well matched to a wide range of phono stages and are generally easy to live with, and as the top MM in the family the MasterTracker is a fitting partner for any of the MoFi decks when you want to hear what your records can really do.

The Phono Stages

MoFi's phono stages were developed with respected designer Peter Madnick. The MoFi UltraPhono Pro is a single-input balanced phono stage, a clean and capable partner for a turntable and cartridge in a focused analog system. The MoFi MasterPhono is the reference phono stage in the line, offering an extensive adjustable loading range that lets you fine tune the match with a wide variety of cartridges. If you plan to experiment with different cartridges over time, that flexibility is genuinely useful.

Think of these three elements as a chain. A resolving turntable and a top cartridge deserve a phono stage that can keep up, and a flexible phono stage rewards you as you refine the rest of the chain. Match the pieces so no single link holds back the others.

The SourcePoint Loudspeakers

The SourcePoint speakers were designed by Andrew Jones, one of the most respected loudspeaker engineers working today. Every model is built around a concentric point-source driver, and understanding that idea explains why these speakers image the way they do.

What a Concentric Point Source Does

In a conventional speaker the tweeter and the mid-bass driver sit apart from one another on the front baffle. That means high frequencies and midrange frequencies leave the speaker from two different points in space, and they blend correctly only in a fairly narrow listening spot. In a concentric point-source design, MoFi places a soft dome tweeter at the acoustic center of the mid-bass cone. The high frequencies and the midrange now radiate from effectively the same point, behaving like a single true point source.

The payoff is twofold. First, imaging becomes remarkably precise and stable, with voices and instruments locking into place on a believable soundstage. Second, dispersion is wide and even, so the tonal balance holds up well as you move around the room and off the central seat. This is a design goal focused on coherence and spaciousness, and it is a hallmark of Andrew Jones's work.

Bookshelves

The MoFi SourcePoint 8 is a compact bookshelf built around the concentric driver, an excellent fit for smaller rooms, near field listening, and setups where a floorstander would be too much. The MoFi SourcePoint 10 Master Edition is a larger standmount that carries the Master Edition refinements, a fuller sounding bookshelf for listeners who want more scale from a stand mounted design. Choose based on room size and how much bass foundation you want before considering a subwoofer.

If you already own a standard SourcePoint 10, the MoFi SourcePoint 10 Master Edition Upgrade Kit lets you bring the crossover up to Master Edition specification, a considered path to more performance from a speaker you already enjoy.

Floorstanders

When room size and listening goals call for a full range floor standing speaker, the MoFi SourcePoint 888 and the MoFi SourcePoint V10 Master Edition carry the concentric point-source concept into larger cabinets with greater bass extension and output. These are designed for bigger rooms and for listeners who want that coherent point-source imaging with the weight and dynamics a floorstander can provide.

Center Channels for Home Theater

If you are building a home theater or a music system that doubles for movies, MoFi offers matching center channels. The MoFi SourcePoint 8 Center and the MoFi SourcePoint 10 Center share the family voicing so dialogue and effects blend seamlessly with your left and right SourcePoints. Pair the center to your main speakers by scale so the front three stay tonally matched.

Choosing an Amplifier for the SourcePoints

This is an important point to understand up front: MoFi does not make amplifiers or receivers. That means a SourcePoint speaker always needs a separate amplifier, and AEA carries premium amplification from other brands to pair with them. The SourcePoints are revealing speakers that scale with high quality amplification, so investing in a strong amplifier is well worth it, and premium amplifiers are entirely appropriate here.

When choosing an amplifier, consider your room size and how loud you like to listen, since larger rooms and floorstanders such as the 888 and V10 Master Edition benefit from more power and current. Also consider whether you want a two channel integrated amplifier for a pure music setup or a multichannel processor and amplifier if you are including a SourcePoint center channel for home theater. Because the concentric driver reveals so much of the source, a clean, well controlled amplifier lets the SourcePoints show their imaging and dispersion strengths. AEA can help you match an amplifier from the brands we carry to the specific SourcePoint model and room you have in mind.

Putting a Full System Together

A satisfying MoFi centered system might start with a turntable, add the MasterTracker cartridge and a phono stage sized to your ambitions, and pair a set of SourcePoints with a premium amplifier from the AEA lineup. Keep the pieces balanced. A reference turntable and phono stage deserve speakers and amplification that can reveal what they capture, and a resolving pair of SourcePoints deserves a clean signal chain feeding them. If you are unsure where to invest first, we are glad to help you plan a path that grows sensibly over time.
