Why Audio-Technica Moving Magnet Cartridges Are So Popular
If you are shopping for a new cartridge, the Audio-Technica VM family is one of the most complete ladders in the category. Every model here shares the same core engineering idea, so once you understand the design you can choose confidently by system, stylus profile, and listening goals rather than guesswork.
All of these cartridges use Audio-Technica's Dual Magnet VM design. Two tiny magnets sit in a V configuration that mirrors the 45 degree cut of a stereo groove wall. The goal is symmetrical output between channels and clean separation. Across the range you will see a familiar and friendly set of numbers: a 4.0 mV nominal output that works with virtually any moving magnet phono input, a recommended load of 47k ohms, load capacitance of 100 to 200 pF, and a 2.0 g nominal tracking force. That consistency means you do not need exotic electronics to enjoy any of them.
What changes as you climb the ladder is the parts that touch the record and translate motion into signal: the stylus shape, the cantilever material, and the coil wire. Those are the variables that shape how much detail is retrieved and how gracefully the cartridge tracks demanding passages.
Understanding the Building Blocks
Stylus profile
Conical is the most forgiving and simplest profile. Elliptical narrows the contact for better high frequency tracing. Nude elliptical removes the mounting shank of a bonded diamond to reduce tip mass. MicroLine and Shibata and Special Line Contact are all fine line profiles that sit deeper and more precisely in the groove, reading inner groove detail and lasting well when set up correctly.
Cantilever
The cantilever carries stylus motion to the magnets. Aluminum is light, consistent, and proven. Boron, whether solid boron or as a cantilever material higher in the range, is stiffer for its mass, which supports faster and more precise transient response.
Coil wire
Higher models use PCOCC coil wire for the signal generating coils. Combined with the finer styli and stiffer cantilevers, this is part of what separates the flagship listening experience from the entry models.
The VM500 Series: Versatile and Upgradeable
The VM500 series is the practical starting point and a beautifully logical family because the styli are interchangeable within the series. You can begin modestly and step up the stylus later without changing the cartridge body.
Audio-Technica AT-VM510xCB
A conical bonded stylus on an aluminum cantilever. This is the easygoing everyday choice, forgiving of setup and gentle with well loved records. It suits a first serious cartridge on a belt drive turntable and listeners who want dependable, relaxed playback.
Audio-Technica AT-VM520xEB
A bonded elliptical stylus that tightens the contact area for improved detail over a conical, while staying very approachable. A natural pick for someone who wants more clarity and image focus without fuss.
Audio-Technica AT-VM530xEN
A nude elliptical stylus lowers tip mass compared to a bonded diamond, and this model extends response to 25 kHz with 25 dB of channel separation. If you love the VM500 body and want the most refined stereo image within this series, this is the one to reach for.
The VM700 Series: Fine Line Detail and Reference Ambitions
The VM700 series steps into fine line stylus profiles, stiffer cantilevers, and PCOCC coils. This is where the priority shifts from value and versatility to detail retrieval and tracking finesse.
Audio-Technica AT-VM745xML
A MicroLinear nude diamond on an aluminum cantilever, delivered as a bare cartridge body for your own headshell. It reads deep groove detail and is a strong choice for a listener building a considered front end who already has a headshell they trust.
Audio-Technica AT-VM740xML/H
The same nude MicroLine philosophy, here paired with PCOCC coils and pre mounted on the AT-HS10 headshell. Channel separation is rated at 28 dB. This is the convenient turnkey answer for anyone who wants a fine line stylus ready to drop onto a standard tonearm without alignment from scratch.
Audio-Technica AT-VM750xSH/H
A nude Shibata stylus on a solid boron cantilever with PCOCC coils, also pre mounted on the AT-HS10 headshell. The Shibata profile and boron cantilever are aimed at fast, precise tracing. Ideal for the enthusiast who wants a fine line listening experience on a capable tonearm and appreciates the ready to play headshell format.
Audio-Technica AT-VM760xSL
The Special Line Contact nude diamond on a boron cantilever, quoted at 30 dB of channel separation, the highest in this group. Offered as a bare body, it is the reference minded choice for a listener chasing the most refined imaging and inner detail this lineup provides, on a well set up arm.
Specialist Cartridges for Specific Records
Audio-Technica AT-VM610xMONO
A dedicated mono moving magnet cartridge for genuine mono pressings. A true mono cartridge ignores vertical noise and delivers a solid, quiet mono image that a stereo cartridge summed to mono cannot fully match. Essential for serious mono LP collectors.
Audio-Technica AT-VM670xSP
Built for 78 RPM shellac with a 3 mil conical stylus and a wider tracking force range up to 4.0 g. If you play vintage 78s, this is the purpose built tool for the job rather than a compromise.
Which Should You Buy By Scenario
First real cartridge upgrade
Start with the AT-VM510xCB or step to the AT-VM520xEB for more detail. Because the VM500 styli are interchangeable, you can upgrade the tip later.
Best stereo imaging within the value series
Choose the AT-VM530xEN with its nude elliptical stylus and extended response.
Turnkey fine line performance with a headshell
Go with the AT-VM740xML/H for MicroLine detail, or the AT-VM750xSH/H for a Shibata stylus on a boron cantilever. Both arrive pre mounted on the AT-HS10.
Bare body fine line for your own headshell
Reach for the AT-VM745xML MicroLinear, or the AT-VM760xSL Special Line Contact for the most refined imaging and highest rated separation in this group.
Dedicated formats
For genuine mono LPs, the AT-VM610xMONO. For 78 RPM shellac, the AT-VM670xSP.
A Note on Matching and Setup
Every cartridge here wants a 47k ohm load and 100 to 200 pF of capacitance, which is standard for moving magnet inputs, so pairing with your existing phono stage is straightforward. Fine line styli reward careful alignment and a solid tonearm, so if you are moving into the VM700 series it is worth taking time over setup to hear what these cartridges can do.
