Frequently Asked Questions

What is an integrated amplifier?

An integrated amplifier combines a preamplifier and a power amplifier in one chassis. It takes a source signal (from a streamer, CD player, turntable, or DAC), controls the volume, and powers your loudspeakers directly — so it's the heart of most two-channel hi-fi systems.

Do I need a separate preamp and power amp, or is an integrated enough?

For most listeners, a good integrated amplifier is enough and often the better value. Separates make sense when you want maximum power for demanding speakers, or you plan to upgrade one stage at a time. Many integrated amps also have preamp outputs, so you can add a power amp later.

What does a phono stage do, and do I need one?

A phono stage amplifies the tiny signal from a turntable cartridge up to line level. If your integrated amp has a phono input, you're set. If not, you'll need an external phono preamp between the turntable and the amp. Moving-magnet (MM) and moving-coil (MC) cartridges need different gain, so check that the phono stage matches your cartridge type.

How much power do I need?

It depends on your speakers' sensitivity and your room. Efficient speakers (90dB+) in a small room are happy with 30–50 watts. Less efficient speakers or large rooms need 100+ watts. All Elite Audio lists verified power specs on every product page and can match an amp to your specific speakers.

What is the difference between Class A, Class AB, and Class D?

Class A runs its output stage at full current all the time — sweetest sound, most heat. Class AB is the common compromise: clean sound with reasonable efficiency. Class D is highly efficient and compact, and modern designs sound excellent. The class alone doesn't determine quality; implementation matters more.

Can I demo an integrated amplifier before buying?

Yes. All Elite Audio has a showroom at 1921 York Rd, Suite 1, Timonium, MD 21093 with in-store demos and private listening sessions. Call (443) 402-5055 to arrange one.
