The Technology Inside
The T/5x is an active, sealed closed-box subwoofer. The closed cabinet is central to its character: it produces bass that starts and stops with the music, tightly controlled and free of the overhang that can blur timing. Inside sits an 8 inch (200mm) long-throw, forward-firing driver driven by an efficient Class D amplifier rated at 125 watts RMS. Low frequency extension reaches down to 32Hz (-6dB in room), which is remarkably deep for a cabinet measuring roughly 300 x 260 x 314 mm and weighing about 12.3 kg (27 lbs).
That combination of a nimble 8 inch driver in a compact sealed box is what allows the T/5x to keep pace with quick, articulate loudspeakers. It is not trying to shake the walls; it is trying to complete the musical picture, add the foundation beneath a double bass or a kick drum, and reveal the air and scale of a recording.
The High Level Connection for Music
The signature REL feature is the High Level connection, a Neutrik Speakon cable taken directly from your power amplifier's speaker terminals. Instead of receiving a separate line-level feed, the T/5x sees the exact same amplified signal, and therefore the same tonal character and voicing, as your main speakers. The result is seamless blending: the sub inherits the personality of your amplifier and speakers rather than sounding like a bolt-on device. For two channel listening this is the connection that makes a REL disappear into the soundstage.
The LFE and Low Level Inputs for Home Theater
The T/5x is equally at home in a movie system. It offers a dedicated .1/LFE input for connection to an AV receiver or processor, letting your bass management route the low-frequency effects channel straight to the subwoofer. There is also a low-level RCA input for line-level sources. Many owners run the High Level connection for stereo music and the LFE input for cinema simultaneously, so the sub is always ready for either job.
Controls That Make Integration Easy
Setup is straightforward thanks to a continuously variable crossover, a gain (volume) control, and a phase switch. The variable crossover lets you dial in exactly where the T/5x hands off to your main speakers, the gain sets the level to match, and the phase switch ensures the sub and speakers are pushing air in agreement at the crossover point. Finishes are offered in high gloss black and high gloss white so it can either blend in or stand as a small design statement.
Where the T/5x Sits in the REL Range
The T/5x is the entry point to the T/x series, REL's accessible audiophile line. If your room is larger, or your speakers reach deeper and demand more output and lower extension, it is worth stepping up the ladder. The REL T/7x moves to a larger driver and more output, the REL T/9x goes further still with greater scale and reach, and the REL T/9x SE adds a further layer of refinement and output at the top of the series. Each step up the range offers more of what a larger room or a more ambitious system may ask for, while the T/5x remains the ideal match for compact and mid-sized spaces where agility matters more than sheer size.

The T/5x is best suited to a smaller room paired with stand-mount or compact loudspeakers, whether your priority is intimate two channel listening or a tidy movie setup. It brings out the bottom octaves that small speakers cannot reach on their own, and it does so without ever sounding heavy or slow.
