PrimaLuna EVO Tube Preamplifiers: A Complete Buying Guide to the EVO 100, 200, 300, and 400

Updated

The PrimaLuna EVO Preamplifier Family at a Glance

PrimaLuna has built a devoted following by taking the warmth and dimensionality of vacuum tube sound and pairing it with build quality and reliability that make the experience effortless to live with. The EVO preamplifier line runs from the EVO 100 through the EVO 200, the EVO 300, and the flagship EVO 400. Every one of them shares a common design philosophy, so once you understand what they have in common, the differences become easy to sort out.

What Every EVO Preamplifier Shares

All four models are true dual mono designs, meaning the left and right channels are built as independent circuits for the best possible separation and imaging. Each uses tube rectification rather than solid state rectification, which contributes to the natural, unforced quality tube lovers seek. Every model is hand wired point to point, a labor intensive approach that eliminates the printed circuit board in the signal path. They all use the well regarded ALPS Blue Velvet potentiometer for volume control and dual potted toroidal power transformers for quiet, stable operation. Finally, each shares the same optional moving magnet phonostage, comes in Silver or Black, and includes remote control.

Model by Model

PrimaLuna EVO 100

The EVO 100 is the most compact and approachable member of the family, measuring 11 inches wide and weighing 30.8 pounds. Its tube complement is a mix of 2x 12AX7 and 2x 12AU7 gain and buffer tubes with 2x 5AR4 rectifiers. It offers four stereo RCA inputs, two stereo RCA outputs, and a tape out, with 10.8 dB of gain and a 2800 ohm output impedance. A slim remote handles volume. For a listener building a first serious tube system or working with a single ended, RCA based signal chain, this is a beautifully complete starting point.

PrimaLuna EVO 200

The EVO 200 steps up in scale to 14.4 inches wide and 39.6 pounds, and it moves to an all 12AU7 gain stage with 4x 12AU7 tubes plus 2x 5AR4 rectifiers. The most meaningful practical addition is a home theater bypass input, which lets you fold your two channel system into a surround setup without compromise. Gain is 10 dB with a 2800 ohm output impedance, and you retain four RCA inputs, two RCA outputs, and a tape out. If you run both music and movies through the same speakers, the EVO 200 solves that neatly.

PrimaLuna EVO 300

The EVO 300 is where the family takes a clear step toward reference performance. It grows to 15.2 inches wide and 52.8 pounds, and the tube complement expands to 6x 12AU7 with 2x 5AR4 rectifiers. Just as important are the internal upgrades: premium Swiss wire, the AC Offset Killer for quieter transformer operation, and Takman resistors in critical positions. The result shows up in the specifications as a dramatically lower 256 ohm output impedance, roughly a tenth that of the EVO 100 and EVO 200. That low output impedance makes the EVO 300 an easier partner for a wider range of power amplifiers and long interconnect runs. You also gain a fifth RCA input, full remote control, and home theater bypass.

PrimaLuna EVO 400

The flagship EVO 400 shares the EVO 300 chassis, weight, tube complement, and premium internal parts, including the Swiss wire, AC Offset Killer, and Takman resistors, along with the same low 256 ohm output impedance. What sets it apart is true balanced operation. It offers both single ended and balanced circuitry, with 3x stereo RCA and 2x stereo XLR inputs, plus RCA and XLR outputs. If your power amplifier accepts balanced connections, or you want the noise rejection advantages of balanced cabling over longer runs, the EVO 400 is the natural choice.

Matching to Systems, Speakers, and Rooms

Because all four are tube preamplifiers, they bring the tonal richness and soundstage depth that many listeners prize, and they pair especially well with detailed or slightly forward loudspeakers that benefit from a little added body. As a general category note, tube preamplification tends to favor a more organic, dimensional presentation than typical solid state designs, and the EVO line delivers that without sounding soft or vague.

Output impedance is the key technical factor when matching to a power amplifier. The EVO 100 and EVO 200 at 2800 ohms are ideally suited to amplifiers with a comfortably high input impedance, which covers a great many designs and is rarely an obstacle in a thoughtfully assembled system. The EVO 300 and EVO 400 at 256 ohms are more forgiving across a broader range of amplifiers and tolerate longer cable runs, which matters in larger rooms or when equipment is spread apart.

Room size and system ambition also guide the decision. A modest room and a straightforward RCA system are well served by the EVO 100. A larger, more resolving system, or one you plan to grow, is better anchored by the EVO 300 or EVO 400.

Which EVO Preamplifier Should You Buy?

You want the classic PrimaLuna experience in a compact form

Choose the EVO 100. It delivers the dual mono, tube rectified, point to point core of the line in the smallest and lightest package, and it is an excellent entry into serious tube listening.

You blend two channel music with home theater

Choose the EVO 200. Its home theater bypass lets your front speakers serve double duty, and the all 12AU7 gain stage keeps the presentation smooth and consistent.

You want reference level performance and flexibility with single ended amplifiers

Choose the EVO 300. The premium Swiss wire, AC Offset Killer, Takman resistors, and low 256 ohm output impedance make it a superb match for a wide array of RCA connected amplifiers and larger systems.

You run balanced electronics or want the ultimate EVO preamp

Choose the EVO 400. It brings everything the EVO 300 offers and adds full XLR input and output capability for balanced systems and longer interconnect runs.

Looking Beyond Tubes

If you find yourself weighing a tube preamplifier against a solid state approach, or you need built in streaming and digital conversion, AEA carries several fine alternatives worth considering alongside the EVO line. The TEAC UD-701N combines a USB DAC, network player, preamplifier, and headphone amplifier in one chassis. The Parasound HALO P6 offers versatile solid state preamplification with onboard digital and phono. The Advance Paris X-P700 and Advance Paris X-P1200 round out the solid state options. Our team is happy to help you compare the character of tubes against these designs in the context of your own system.
