Why a REL Is Different
REL Acoustics is a British specialist that has spent decades on a single idea: a subwoofer should not simply add bulk to movie explosions. It should complete the music. REL calls its products sub-bass systems rather than subwoofers because they are engineered to integrate with your existing full-range speakers, filling in the lowest octaves so seamlessly that you stop noticing the sub is even in the room and simply hear a bigger, deeper, more effortless version of your speakers.
That philosophy applies equally to two-channel music and to home theater. A well set up REL brings scale and air to an orchestra just as convincingly as it brings weight to a film soundtrack.
The Heart of the System: The High Level Connection
The signature that sets REL apart is the High Level connection. Using a Neutrik Speakon cable, a REL takes its signal directly from your power amplifier's speaker terminals. This means the subwoofer receives the very same amplified signal, and therefore the same tonal character and timing, as your main speakers. The result is the famous REL trait of the sub disappearing into the music, because it is voiced by your amplifier just like the speakers it is supporting.
REL subs also provide Low Level (line) inputs and a dedicated LFE/.1 input for home-theater bass management. Many owners in combined music and theater systems connect both, using High Level for two-channel listening and the LFE input for movies. If you want to upgrade the High Level run itself, the REL Bassline Blue High Level cable is REL's own performance option, while the REL Commander and REL Commodore are dedicated LFE cables for the .1 connection.
Understanding the REL Ranges
REL offers several distinct ranges, each with its own design goal. Choosing well is less about finding a single best model and more about matching the range and model to your speakers, your room, and whether you lead with music or movies.
T/x Series: Entry Audiophile
The T/x series is where the classic REL experience begins. These are filter-less, fast, and musical designs built to integrate cleanly with bookshelf and floorstanding speakers in small to medium rooms. The REL T/5x is a compact, agile starting point for near-field and smaller spaces. Moving up the range, the REL T/7x adds output and lower extension for medium rooms, and the REL T/9x steps up again with more of both. For those who want additional refinement within the T range, the REL T/9x SE is the elevated expression of the flagship T model.
Classic Series: Retro Styling, Music First
The Classic series pairs a retro-styled cabinet with a voicing that is unapologetically music first. If your system leans toward vinyl, jazz, acoustic, and vintage-inspired aesthetics, the REL Classic 98 and the higher REL Classic 99 deliver that warm, tuneful REL character in a cabinet designed to be seen and enjoyed.
S Series: Carbon-Fibre Speed and Output
The S series introduces carbon-fibre drivers for greater output and speed while retaining the musical integration REL is known for. These are the choice for larger rooms and more demanding speakers where you want authority without sacrificing agility. The REL S/550 serves medium to large rooms beautifully, while the REL S/850 offers more output and lower extension for larger spaces and full-range floorstanders.
Reference Tier: Flagship Refinement
At the Reference level you reach REL's most refined and capable designs. The REL Carbon Special represents flagship-grade refinement and output for serious two-channel and reference home-theater systems. For the ultimate in scale, the REL 212 brings a multi-driver design intended to move enormous amounts of air with speed and control in the largest rooms.
HT Series: Dedicated Home Theater
The HT series is purpose-built for home theater, optimized for LFE slam and the visceral impact of film. These models are engineered around the .1 channel and cinema dynamics. The REL HT/1003 suits smaller theater rooms, the REL HT/1205 steps up for medium to large rooms, and the REL HT/1510 Predator is built for large, dedicated theaters that demand the deepest, most powerful low-frequency effects. If your priority is music integration through the High Level connection, look to the T/x, Classic, S, or Reference ranges; if your system is a dedicated theater built around LFE, the HT series is designed for exactly that job.
Planar Series
The Planar series offers another distinct approach within the REL lineup. The REL Planar PL-1 and the higher REL Planar PL-2 extend the range of options for systems where their particular design goals are the right fit. As always, matching to your speakers and room is the deciding factor.
Going Wireless
Not every room allows a tidy wired run from amplifier to subwoofer. REL's wireless systems transmit the signal to a compatible subwoofer without a physical cable across the floor. The REL HT-Air MKII, the REL Arrow, and the REL AirShip II each serve specific compatible REL models. A wireless transmitter makes no sound on its own; it is paired to a particular subwoofer, so it is essential to confirm that the wireless system matches the sub you own or are considering. We are glad to verify compatibility for you.
Stacking RELs: The Line Array
One of the most rewarding paths in the REL world is running two or more subs together in a line array. Stacking RELs delivers greater output and, just as importantly, a larger and more three-dimensional soundstage as the additional low-frequency energy loads the room more evenly. To connect a stacked pair, the REL Bassline Blue Line Array Connectors are designed specifically for linking subs in this configuration. Many listeners who add a second matching REL describe it as a bigger step forward than they expected.
How to Choose: Room, Speakers, and Priorities
Start with Your Room
Room size is the first filter. Smaller rooms are well served by the T/5x or T/7x and the Classic 98. Medium rooms open up the T/9x, Classic 99, and S/550. Larger rooms call for the S/850, the Reference models, and the larger HT subs for theater use.
Match to Your Speakers
Aim to keep the subwoofer appropriate to the speakers it supports. Compact speakers pair naturally with the T/x and Classic models. More capable floorstanders benefit from the S series or Reference tier so the sub can keep pace with the speed and scale of your mains.
Music or Movies
If music leads, prioritize the High Level connection and the T/x, Classic, S, and Reference ranges. If your system is a dedicated home theater, the HT series is engineered for that role. Many rooms do both, in which case a music-focused REL connected via High Level for two-channel and via the LFE input for film gives you the best of both worlds.
