Meet the Wharfedale Aura CS
The center channel is the heart of any home theater. It carries the majority of the dialogue and anchors the front soundstage, which means the quality of your center speaker shapes almost every scene you watch. The Wharfedale Aura CS is a compact 5 inch two way center channel designed to bring the refined character of the Aura family to the middle of your front stage. Like the rest of the range it is built around an Air Motion Transformer tweeter, and it is sold each so you can add exactly one to complete your front three.
Design and Technology
The defining feature of the Aura CS is its AMT tweeter. An Air Motion Transformer works differently from a conventional dome. Instead of pushing air with a rigid dome, it moves air through a pleated, folded diaphragm that gently squeezes and releases. This approach moves a large volume of air with very little diaphragm mass, and the result is a high frequency response that stays composed and detailed even during busy, layered mixes.
Paired with the AMT is a 5 inch mid bass driver arrangement in a two way layout tuned specifically for the center channel role. The cabinet is proportioned to sit neatly below or above a display, and the visual language matches the floorstanders and standmounts in the Aura line so your front three share a consistent look and, more importantly, a consistent tonal signature.
Why the Tweeter Choice Matters for a Center
Dialogue lives in the upper midrange and lower treble, exactly the region where clarity and fatigue are decided. The AMT tweeter in the Aura CS is well suited to reproducing voices with a sense of ease. Consonants come through cleanly, and long listening or viewing sessions stay comfortable rather than harsh.
Sound Character
The Aura CS leans toward an open, articulate presentation. Voices sound present and intelligible without being pushed forward or thickened. Because it uses the same style of tweeter as its siblings, it blends seamlessly when panning effects sweep from your left speaker across the center to your right speaker. That timbral continuity is one of the biggest reasons to keep an entire front stage within a single range.
Where a floorstander in the range delivers deeper low end reach on its own, a center channel like the CS is typically crossed over to a subwoofer for the deepest material, letting it focus on the vocal and midrange detail it does best.
Ideal Room and System
The Aura CS is a natural fit for small to medium rooms and for setups where the display sits at a sensible viewing distance. Its compact footprint makes it easy to place on a media console or a dedicated shelf, ideally with the tweeter as close to ear level as your furniture allows.
For the most cohesive result, build your front stage from the Aura family. Pair the CS with a set of Aura 1 bookshelf speakers or Aura 2 standmount speakers for a compact system, or step up to the Aura 3 or Aura 4 floorstanders when you want more scale and low end authority from your left and right channels. In every case the shared AMT tweeter keeps voices and effects matched across the front.
Its Place in the Range
Within the Aura lineup there are two center channel options. The Aura C is the larger center, while the Aura CS is the more compact choice. If your left and right speakers are the smaller Aura 1 or Aura 2, the CS often makes an elegantly proportioned partner. If your mains are the taller Aura 3 or Aura 4 floorstanders and your room is on the larger side, the bigger Aura C may better match their output and scale. Both share the family sound, so the decision comes down to room size, placement space, and how you want the center to balance against your mains.
Amplifier Pairing Thoughts
The Aura CS pairs comfortably with the center channel amplification found in most quality AV receivers and processors. It does not demand exotic power, but it rewards clean, well matched amplification. If your surround processor allows individual channel level and distance calibration, take the time to dial the CS in so it integrates smoothly with your mains and subwoofer. Setting an appropriate crossover point lets the CS concentrate on its strengths in the midrange and treble while your subwoofer handles the lowest frequencies.
Room calibration systems can help too, but even a careful manual setup will let the AMT tweeter show its natural, unforced character.
