Inside, the VRDS-701 uses a dual monaural DAC configuration. In practice that means the left and right channels are handled by their own dedicated conversion paths, which supports strong channel separation and a clean, well organized soundstage. The player carries a fully balanced circuit topology, and it offers balanced XLR outputs alongside unbalanced RCA, so it can integrate with balanced electronics or a more traditional single ended setup.
The output stage is TEAC's HCLD high current output buffer. This buffer is designed to deliver current quickly and hold its composure into a range of loads, which helps the player stay dynamic and stable regardless of what it is feeding. Combined with the balanced design, it gives the 701 a grounded, confident delivery.
USB, PCM and DSD
Beyond spinning discs, the VRDS-701 works as a DAC for your computer. Its USB input supports both PCM and DSD, so you can play high resolution files through the same dual monaural converter and output stage that serves the disc drive. Coaxial and optical inputs let you connect other digital sources such as a streamer or a game or TV output, and coaxial and optical digital outputs are also on board if you want to route the signal elsewhere.
10 MHz Clock Input
For listeners who want to take timing accuracy further, the VRDS-701 includes a 10 MHz external clock input. This lets you lock the player to a dedicated master clock down the road, a genuine upgrade path built into the unit from the start.
The Digital Preamp Function
One of the most useful traits of the VRDS-701 is its variable output with volume control. This turns the player into a digital preamp. If you already have or plan to build around a separate DAC, the 701T transport lets you keep the disc mechanism and put your converter of choice downstream.
