An introduction to the Spendor Classic 4/5
The Spendor Classic 4/5 is a compact two way stand mount loudspeaker that draws directly on the BBC monitoring tradition Spendor helped establish. Hand built in Hailsham, England, it pairs a single 150mm bass and midrange driver with a 22mm soft dome tweeter inside a thin-wall, lightly damped enclosure. It is a small speaker with a big lineage, designed to reveal the texture and timing of voices and acoustic instruments in a natural, unforced way.
The Classic line design philosophy
The Classic line follows the BBC-derived approach to cabinet building. Rather than a heavily braced, inert box, the Classic 4/5 uses a thin-wall, lightly damped enclosure. The idea is to control resonance rather than fight it entirely, letting the cabinet settle quickly so it never smears the sound of the drivers. This is a very different design goal from the A-line and D-line models, which use EP77 polymer cone drivers, the LPZ tweeter and Dynamic Damping cabinet technology to pursue a more modern, high resolution presentation.
Because of that Classic voicing, the 4/5 tends to sound warm, midrange forward and easy on the ear. Its softer, valve-friendly character makes it forgiving of recordings and electronics, and it rewards long listening sessions rather than demanding your attention. It is a speaker built to communicate music rather than to impress with fireworks.

Sound character and ideal use case
The Classic 4/5 excels in small to medium rooms where its compact footprint and refined midrange can shine. Vocals, strings, acoustic guitar and jazz ensembles come through with a lifelike, human quality. It disappears into a soundstage rather than drawing attention to itself as a source. If your listening space is a study, a den, a bedroom system or a modest living room, this is a speaker that fits comfortably both physically and sonically.
With a sensitivity of 84 dB and a recommended amplifier power range of 25 to 100 watts, the 4/5 wants a well matched amplifier that offers clean, controlled power. It is not the loudest or most demanding speaker in the world, but giving it a capable amp lets it breathe and stay composed at realistic listening levels.
Where it sits in the Spendor Classic range
The 4/5 is the compact entry point into the Classic world, and it makes a natural stepping stone within the range. If you want a slightly larger cabinet and more scale while staying true to the same BBC-derived approach, the Spendor Classic 3/1 and Spendor Classic 2/3 extend the presentation. The Spendor Classic 1/2 continues that progression as a larger stand mount, while the Spendor Classic 100 and its titanium equipped sibling the Spendor Classic 100Ti represent the fuller, more ambitious end of the Classic family. Within this same range, moving up brings greater scale and low end authority, so the choice comes down to your room size and how much physical presence you want.
If you are drawn to the more modern Spendor voicing instead, the Spendor A1.2 from the A-line offers a different design goal with its EP77 drivers and Dynamic Damping cabinet, trading the softer Classic character for a more contemporary sound. Neither is better; they simply pursue different priorities.
Building a system around the Classic 4/5
Because the Classic 4/5 has a naturally warm, forgiving character, it partners beautifully with a wide range of electronics. Its recommended power range makes it easy to match.
Integrated amplifiers
The LEAK Stereo 230 Integrated Amplifier is a lovely companion, offering a rich, musical presentation that complements the 4/5's Classic voicing and its valve-friendly character. For a clean and detailed modern take, the TEAC Audio AX-505 Stereo Integrated Amplifier pairs neatly with a compact standmount and keeps the sound tidy and controlled. The Audiolab 7000A Integrated Amplifier is another versatile match, bringing built in convenience alongside ample control for the 4/5.
Network and all in one options
If you want streaming built into your amplifier, the Yamaha R-N1000A Network Receiver gives you a complete one box heart for the system that suits the 4/5's easygoing nature. For a separates approach with streaming at the front, consider the Audiolab 9000Q Preamplifier or the Onkyo Icon P-80 Network Preamplifier paired with a suitable power amplifier.
Sources
For digital, the EverSolo T10 Streaming Transport makes an excellent front end, feeding a clean signal into your amplifier and letting the Classic 4/5 do what it does best. If vinyl is your preference, the Audio-Technica AT-LPA2 Fully Manual Belt-Drive Turntable is a fitting analog source whose relaxed presentation suits the warmth of the Classic voicing.
How it compares to other standmounts we carry
If you are cross shopping compact speakers, it helps to think in terms of design intent rather than ranking. The LEAK Sandwich 250 Standmount Loudspeakers share a vintage-inspired sensibility, while the Mission 700 Loudspeakers offer their own heritage-minded take. For a more modern coincident driver presentation, the MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 8 Bookshelf Speakers and the larger MoFi Electronics SourcePoint 10 Master Edition Bookshelf Speakers pursue a different tuning philosophy. The Amphion Argon 1 Bookshelf Speaker (Pair) rounds out the field with a controlled directivity approach. The Classic 4/5 sits apart with its BBC-derived thin-wall cabinet and midrange focused, valve-friendly voicing, so the right choice comes down to the character you prefer in your room.
