Devialet Buying Guide: Phantom Wireless Speakers and the Astra Amplifier

Updated

Two Roads Into Devialet

Devialet is a French high-end brand celebrated for its ADH amplification and its refusal to follow convention. What surprises many people first meeting the brand is that Devialet actually offers two very different kinds of systems, each designed with a distinct goal in mind. On one path you have the Phantom, a fully active wireless speaker that contains everything it needs to make music. On the other you have the Astra, a flagship streaming integrated amplifier built to drive traditional passive loudspeakers. Understanding that split is the key to choosing well, and this guide walks you through both.

As an authorized Devialet dealer, All Elite Audio is here to help you match the right approach to your room, your listening habits and the way you like to live with music.

What Is ADH Amplification

ADH stands for Analog Digital Hybrid. It is Devialet's signature amplification design, and it aims to combine two things that are usually at odds. The analog stage contributes the warmth, control and musical character prized in classic amplification, while the digital stage contributes efficiency and power in a remarkably compact footprint. The result is a lot of clean output from a small, cool running package. This is the technology that lets a Phantom deliver so much sound from a single enclosure, and it informs the engineering philosophy behind the Astra as well.

The Phantom Family: Active Wireless Speakers

A Phantom is an all-in-one active wireless speaker. Inside a single sculpted enclosure it carries its own ADH amplification, its own DAC and its own streaming platform. That means no separate amplifier, no external DAC and no rack of components. You bring music to it wirelessly and it does the rest. Devialet's Heart Bass Implosion design uses opposing lateral bass drivers to produce deep, physical low end from a cabinet far smaller than the sound suggests.

On the streaming side, every Phantom supports AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready and UPnP, so it slots easily into whatever ecosystem you already use. A single Phantom can run solo, two can be configured as a stereo pair, and multiple units can be grouped for multiroom listening through the Devialet app.

Phantom Ultimate 98dB

The Devialet Phantom Ultimate 98dB delivers output up to 98dB SPL and is a wonderful choice for bedrooms, studies, apartments and mid sized living spaces. It carries the same core Phantom design language, the same Heart Bass Implosion bass and the same full streaming suite, in a form that suits rooms where its output is a natural fit.

Phantom Ultimate 108dB

The Devialet Phantom Ultimate 108dB is the higher output model in the Ultimate range. Rated at 1100W with output up to 108dB SPL and featuring a titanium tweeter, it is built for larger rooms and for listeners who want more headroom and greater scale. Because both models share the same platform, choosing between them comes down to room size and how much output and reach you want. Within this same Ultimate range, the 108dB legitimately offers more power and higher maximum output than the 98dB, so let the size of your space guide you.

Completing a Phantom Setup

One of the joys of Phantom is how little it needs. It does not require a separate amplifier, ever. To finish the setup you simply choose how to place and control it.

Each of these accessories is sized to a specific Phantom model and makes no sound on its own, so be sure to match the accessory to the Phantom you choose.

The Astra: A Flagship Streaming Integrated Amplifier

The Devialet Astra takes a completely different approach. Rather than being a self contained speaker, it is a flagship streaming integrated amplifier that gathers an amplifier, DAC, preamplifier, phono stage and streamer into a single chassis. It delivers 2 x 300W into 4 ohms and is designed to drive traditional passive loudspeakers of your choosing.

This is the path for the listener who wants to select passive speakers to match their room and taste, who values a built in phono stage for a turntable, and who enjoys the flexibility of a component that centralizes sources while keeping the speakers separate. Because the Astra is built to power passive loudspeakers, it should always be paired with passive speakers and never with an active or powered speaker.

Completing an Astra Setup

To build a full system around the Astra you add a pair of passive loudspeakers suited to your room and your listening level, plus your chosen sources. Its onboard streaming, DAC and phono stage mean much of what you would otherwise buy as separates is already inside the chassis, keeping the rest of the system elegantly simple. Our team can help you assemble a balanced, price appropriate pairing.

Phantom or Astra: Which Path Fits You

These two offerings are not competitors so much as answers to different questions.

  • Choose a Phantom system if you want the simplest possible route to serious sound, with amplification, DAC and streaming built in. It is ideal for those who prize clean placement, easy setup, wireless convenience and the ability to grow from one speaker to a stereo pair or a whole home multiroom system.
  • Choose the Astra if you want to hand pick passive loudspeakers, use a turntable through a built in phono stage, and enjoy a traditional separates style listening room anchored by one refined component.

Some listeners even keep both ideas in mind, using Phantom for casual and multiroom listening while building an Astra based room for focused sessions. There is no wrong answer, only the setup that suits how you live and listen.
