Thorens TD 1500 Sub-Chassis Belt-Drive Turntable
Thorens TD 1500 Sub-Chassis Belt-Drive Turntable With TP 150 Tonearm
A direct tribute to the turntable that started a revolution — the three-point suspended subchassis returns, rebuilt for the 21st century.
In 1965, Thorens introduced the TD 150 — the world's first mass-produced turntable with a three-point spring-suspended subchassis that isolated the platter and tonearm from the motor and external vibration. It was not the first suspended subchassis turntable in existence, but it was the first produced in volume, and it established a design principle that defined the audiophile turntable category for decades afterward. The Thorens TD 1500, introduced in 2021, is a direct tribute to that legacy. It revives the three-point suspended subchassis in a fully modern execution — Alucobond double-layer aluminum composite subchassis for exceptional rigidity, an incremental encoder-controlled DC motor for electronically stabilized speed accuracy, a 1.4 kg die-cast aluminum platter with Delrin thrust bearing, the newly developed TP 150 9-inch tonearm with SME headshell compatibility, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs, and the Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge with nude fine-line stylus pre-installed from the factory.

The Three-Point Suspended Subchassis — Thorens' Foundational Design
The TD 1500's most essential engineering feature is the same as its famous ancestor's: a subchassis suspended on three conical springs that physically decouples the platter, bearing, and tonearm from the motor, outer plinth, and external environment. Vibrations from the belt-drive motor, from speakers, from room acoustics, and from footfall that would otherwise reach the tonearm and stylus as noise are absorbed and isolated by this spring suspension before they have any path to the playing surface. The result is the quiet, black background and freedom from acoustic feedback that defines the Thorens sound.
The TD 1500 improves on the original TD 150 in one immediately practical way: the springs can be adjusted from above through corresponding holes in the platter without removing the platter. On the original TD 150 and many classic suspended-subchassis designs, spring adjustment requires partial disassembly. On the TD 1500 it is a simple above-deck operation. The subchassis itself is constructed from double-layer Alucobond — an aluminum composite panel material chosen for its exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio and resonance resistance — making it stiffer and more inert than a solid aluminum subchassis of the same mass.
Incremental Encoder-Controlled DC Motor — Electronic Speed Stabilization
The TD 1500's DC motor is monitored by an incremental encoder that continuously measures actual platter rotation speed and feeds corrections to the motor controller to maintain precise 33⅓ and 45 RPM. If an external disturbance changes the platter speed — even something as minor as an air current — the encoder detects the deviation and the controller corrects it automatically. This active closed-loop speed control is what enables the TD 1500's excellent wow and flutter specification and the stable pitch that precise vinyl playback requires. Speed is selected via a lever on the front left of the chassis — the single control on the top surface, in the Thorens tradition of minimal visible operating elements. An external 12V power supply handles AC-to-DC conversion outside the chassis.
1.4 kg Die-Cast Aluminum Platter With Delrin Thrust Bearing
The TD 1500's 12-inch platter is die-cast aluminum, 22mm thick, weighing 1.4 kg — substantial enough to provide meaningful rotational inertia without the extreme mass of some high-end platters. Greater platter inertia resists speed changes caused by stylus drag during groove tracing, contributing to speed stability alongside the active motor control. The platter rotates on a sealed bearing assembly with a Delrin thrust bearing — Delrin (polyoxymethylene) being specifically chosen for its low friction, smooth running, and long service life in bearing applications. A heavy rubber mat sits on top of the platter.
TP 150 Tonearm — Two-Part Counterweight, SME Headshell, Ruby Anti-Skate
The TP 150 is a newly developed 9-inch aluminum tonearm with 14 grams effective mass, designed specifically for the TD 1500 and related in design to the TP 124 arm on the TD 124 DD. Height and azimuth are both fully adjustable — VTA (vertical tracking angle) adjustment allows the arm pivot height to be set for different cartridge body heights, and azimuth adjustment lets the cartridge be precisely aligned in the groove for maximum channel separation.
The counterweight is a two-piece design that together accommodates cartridges from 5 to 30 grams — an unusually wide compatibility range that extends from the lightest high-compliance moving magnets up to heavy, low-compliance cartridges like the legendary Ortofon SPU. The SME headshell connector is the standard Ortofon/SME bayonet type, allowing compatible headshells to be swapped without alignment tools. Anti-skating uses a weight on a nylon thread guided over a ruby bearing — the ruby minimizing friction at the thread contact point for more accurate and consistent anti-skate force across the record.
Balanced XLR and Unbalanced RCA Outputs — Unique at This Price
The TD 1500's balanced XLR output is noted by Thorens as a genuine unique selling point in its class — few turntables at or near $2,995 offer true balanced output from the cartridge signal. Balanced connection carries the audio signal as a differential pair — two conductors with opposite polarity, with any common-mode noise on both conductors cancelled at the differential input of a balanced phono stage or preamplifier. For moving coil cartridges in particular, where the signal voltage is extremely low (fractions of a millivolt), the noise rejection of balanced connection can meaningfully lower the noise floor and reduce hum susceptibility compared to unbalanced RCA connection. Unbalanced RCA outputs are also provided for use with conventional single-ended phono stages.
Note that the TD 1500 does not include phono interconnect cables — tonearm cables are not provided. You will need a suitable tonearm cable, either RCA or XLR terminated depending on your phono stage, before the turntable is ready to connect to your system. Our team at All Elite Audio can recommend appropriate cables to pair with the TD 1500.
Ortofon 2M Bronze — Pre-Installed and Ready to Play
The TD 1500 ships with the Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge pre-installed on the included headshell. The 2M Bronze is the third tier of Ortofon's 2M moving magnet series, equipped with a nude fine-line stylus — a stylus diamond bonded directly to the cantilever without an intermediate shank, with a fine-line profile that traces groove walls with exceptional accuracy and reduced tracking distortion compared to elliptical styli. The 2M Bronze delivers excellent channel separation, extended high-frequency response, and the low tracking force and compliance that allow it to extract fine detail without excess stylus wear. At $449 when purchased separately, the included 2M Bronze represents meaningful added value in the TD 1500's pricing.
The TP 150's two-part counterweight accommodates cartridges from 5 to 30 grams, meaning the TD 1500 can accept a wide range of aftermarket cartridges — including heavy moving coil designs — should the owner wish to upgrade beyond the 2M Bronze.

Frequently Asked Questions — Thorens TD 1500
What is the Thorens TD 1500 and what makes it historically significant? The TD 1500 is Thorens' modern tribute to the TD 150 — the turntable introduced in 1965 that established the three-point spring-suspended subchassis as the defining architecture of the audiophile belt-drive turntable. Thorens has rebuilt this design with 21st-century technology: a double-layer Alucobond subchassis, an incremental encoder-controlled DC motor for active speed stabilization, a 1.4 kg die-cast aluminum platter with Delrin thrust bearing, the newly developed TP 150 tonearm with height/azimuth adjustment and two-part counterweight accommodating cartridges from 5 to 30 grams, and both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. The Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge with nude fine-line stylus is included pre-installed.
What does the three-point suspended subchassis do and why does it matter? The subchassis is a secondary chassis inside the outer plinth that carries the platter bearing and tonearm, suspended on three conical springs. This spring suspension isolates everything that matters — the platter, the tonearm, the stylus — from vibrations transmitted through the outer plinth from the motor, from speakers, from room acoustics, and from foot traffic. Without this isolation, those vibrations reach the stylus and appear in the audio signal as noise or resonance. The TD 1500's suspension is adjustable from above through holes in the platter — a significant practical improvement over the original TD 150 which required more complex disassembly to adjust.
Why does the TD 1500 have both RCA and XLR outputs? Balanced XLR connection carries the audio signal as a differential pair, with common-mode noise on both conductors cancelled at the balanced input of a compatible phono stage. For very low-output moving coil cartridges — where the signal is only fractions of a millivolt — balanced connection can reduce the noise floor and hum susceptibility significantly. Thorens notes this as a unique selling point in the TD 1500's class, as balanced phono output is rarely offered at this price. Unbalanced RCA is also provided for standard single-ended phono stages.
Does the TD 1500 include phono interconnects? No. The TD 1500 does not include tonearm interconnect cables. You will need to purchase a suitable tonearm cable — either RCA or XLR terminated depending on your phono stage — before the turntable is ready to connect to your system. All Elite Audio can recommend appropriate cables to pair with the TD 1500. Call or text us before purchase to discuss options.
What is the TP 150 tonearm and what range of cartridges does it accept? The TP 150 is a 9-inch aluminum tonearm with 14 grams effective mass, designed by Helmut Thiele specifically for the TD 1500 and related in design to the TP 124 arm on the TD 124 DD. Height and azimuth are both adjustable. The two-part counterweight accommodates cartridges from 5 to 30 grams — an unusually wide range that covers everything from lightweight high-compliance moving magnets to heavy low-compliance designs like the Ortofon SPU. The SME headshell connector allows compatible headshells to be swapped without tools. Anti-skating uses a weight on a nylon thread guided over a ruby bearing for low friction and consistent force.
What cartridge is included and can it be upgraded? The TD 1500 ships with the Ortofon 2M Bronze — a nude fine-line stylus moving magnet cartridge that retails at approximately $449 separately. The 2M Bronze offers excellent tracking, extended frequency response, and low distortion. The TD 1500 accepts a wide range of cartridges thanks to the TP 150's two-part counterweight covering 5 to 30 grams. Thorens also offers the TAS 1500 MC cartridge, designed specifically for the TP 150 tonearm.
How is the spring suspension adjusted on the TD 1500? The three conical springs can be adjusted from above through corresponding holes in the platter — the platter does not need to be removed. This is a significant convenience improvement over the original TD 150 and many other suspended-subchassis designs. The factory sets the suspension correctly before shipping, and most users will never need to adjust it. If adjustment is needed due to an unusually heavy or light cartridge, the process is accessible without disassembly.
What finishes is the TD 1500 available in? The Thorens TD 1500 is available in Black High Gloss and Walnut High Gloss.
What warranty does the Thorens TD 1500 include? The Thorens TD 1500 carries Thorens' standard manufacturer warranty. All Elite Audio is a fully authorized Thorens dealer, ensuring your warranty is valid and supported.
