The Spendor Classic Philosophy
Spendor has been hand building loudspeakers in Hailsham, England since 1969, and the Classic range carries the company's oldest and most respected traditions forward. These are the descendants of the BBC monitor lineage, and everything about their design serves one goal: a natural, unforced presentation of the human voice and acoustic music that you can listen to for hours without fatigue.
What unites every model in the Classic line is the BBC-derived thin-wall, lightly damped cabinet. Rather than trying to build an inert, dead box, Spendor engineers the enclosure walls to be thin and carefully damped so that cabinet resonances are pushed low in frequency and level, where they are far less audible and less intrusive on the music. The result is a distinctive sense of openness and midrange truthfulness. The Classic range is also voiced to be softer and more forgiving than Spendor's contemporary A-line and D-line, which makes it especially rewarding with valve amplification and with lower powered, high quality solid state.

How the Classic Range Is Organized
The Classic line spans compact stand mounts through large stand mounts and full floorstanders. Within the range, Spendor also offers Ti versions of certain models, which use titanium components to extend resolution and refinement while keeping the core Classic character intact. Compact and Small Room Stand Mounts
The Spendor Classic 4/5 is the most compact member of the family, a two way stand mount built around a 150mm bass and midrange driver and a 22mm soft dome tweeter. With a sensitivity of 84 dB and a recommended amplifier power of 25 to 100 watts, it is designed for smaller rooms and nearfield listening where a big cabinet would simply overwhelm the space. It delivers the classic Spendor midrange in a footprint that suits apartments, studies, and intimate second systems.
The Spendor Classic 3/1 steps up to a slightly more substantial two way stand mount. It keeps the same essential design goal of a compact, room friendly monitor but offers a fuller presentation than the 4/5. It rewards dedicated rigid stands and works beautifully in small to medium rooms where you want more scale than the 4/5 provides without moving to a large cabinet.
Mid-Sized Stand Mounts
The Spendor Classic 2/3 is a two way stand mount built around a 180mm bass and midrange unit in a reflex loaded, thin-wall cabinet, paired with a 22mm soft dome tweeter. The larger driver and enclosure give it more low frequency weight and a bigger sense of scale than the smaller two way models, making it a natural choice for medium sized rooms where you want a proper full range feel without a floorstander.
The Spendor Classic 1/2 moves to a three way configuration in a stand mount format, with dedicated bass, midrange, and tweeter drivers. Adding a dedicated midrange driver frees the midband from bass duties, which pays dividends in vocal clarity and instrumental separation. It suits the listener who wants three way sophistication and refinement but prefers the placement flexibility and visual footprint of a stand mount.
Large Reference Stand Mounts
The Spendor Classic 100 is a landmark design and one of the most complete loudspeakers in the range. It is a large three way stand mount with a 300mm (12 inch) bass and mid driver, a dedicated 180mm (7 inch) midrange, and a 22mm soft dome tweeter. With a sensitivity of 90 dB, a nominal 8 ohm impedance, a frequency response quoted from 32 Hz to 25 kHz, and a recommended amplifier power of 25 to 200 watts, it delivers full range scale and effortless dynamics from a cabinet you can still place on stands. This is the speaker for the listener who wants floorstander weight and authority with the imaging precision and disappearing act of a monitor.
The Spendor Classic 100Ti is the titanium equipped evolution of that same platform. It shares the three way large stand mount architecture, the 90 dB sensitivity, and the 25 to 200 watt amplifier window, while its titanium components are aimed at added resolution and refinement. Within this same Spendor design, the Ti version legitimately offers a further step in detail and transparency for the listener who wants the last measure of finesse from the Classic 100 concept.
Flagship Floorstanders
The Spendor Classic 200 is the three way floorstanding statement of the range. It brings the BBC-derived thin-wall, lightly damped cabinet philosophy to a full floorstanding format, delivering the greatest sense of scale, low frequency extension, and room filling authority in the Classic line. This is the speaker for larger rooms and for listeners who want the fullest expression of the Classic voice without stands.
The Spendor Classic 200Ti is the titanium version of that flagship. It retains the three way floorstanding design and thin-wall Classic cabinet while adding titanium components for a further step in resolution and refinement. Within the same Spendor floorstanding platform, the Ti offers the most detailed and refined presentation of the range for the listener building a true reference system.
Which Spendor Classic Should You Buy?
For a small room, apartment, or nearfield desk system
Choose the Classic 4/5. Its compact cabinet and modest power requirements make it ideal where space is limited, and it still delivers the essential Spendor midrange magic.
For a small to medium room where you want more scale
Choose the Classic 3/1 for a fuller two way presentation, or step up to the Classic 2/3 when you want the added low frequency weight of its larger 180mm driver and reflex loaded cabinet.
For the listener who prioritizes midrange purity in a medium room
Choose the Classic 1/2. Its three way configuration with a dedicated midrange driver brings added vocal clarity and instrumental separation while keeping the stand mount footprint.
For full range performance without a floorstander
Choose the Classic 100. Its large three way design and 90 dB sensitivity deliver floorstander scale and easy dynamics from a stand mounted cabinet. If you want a further step in resolution and refinement on that same platform, choose the Classic 100Ti.
For larger rooms and the fullest Classic voice
Choose the Classic 200 floorstander for maximum scale and low frequency authority. For a reference system where you want the most detailed and refined expression of the range, choose the Classic 200Ti.
Matching Amplification and Sources
A loudspeaker needs amplification to make sound, and the Classic range is voiced to reward careful system matching. Because the Classic line is softer and more forgiving than Spendor's A-line and D-line, it partners especially well with valve amplifiers and with high quality lower powered solid state. The smaller models such as the Classic 4/5 pair naturally with a modest but refined integrated amplifier suited to a nearfield or small room system.
