Introducing the Spendor A2.2
Founded in 1969 and still hand built in Hailsham, England, Spendor has spent more than half a century refining a very particular idea of what a loudspeaker should do: reproduce music with natural tonal balance, low coloration, and long term listening ease. The Spendor A2.2 is the most compact floorstander in the modern A line, and it distills that philosophy into a slim, room friendly cabinet that suits real living spaces beautifully.

The Design and Technology
The A2.2 is a two way, floorstanding design built around two drivers. A single 180mm EP77 bass and midrange driver handles the foundation and the all important midrange, while a 22mm LPZ tweeter takes over above the 4.2 kHz crossover point. This gives a stated frequency response of 40 Hz to 25 kHz.
The EP77 bass and midrange driver
Spendor developed its EP77 polymer cone material specifically for the A line. The goal is a cone that is light and rigid enough to move quickly and cleanly, yet well behaved enough to avoid the harsh resonances that can creep into a wide bandwidth driver. Because a single driver covers both bass and the critical midrange in the A2.2, voices and instruments arrive coherent and free of the discontinuities that a driver handover in that region can introduce.
The LPZ tweeter
The 22mm LPZ tweeter uses a Linear Pressure Zone approach, with a micro foil in front of the dome that helps control the airflow and smooth the response. The result is a treble that is detailed and open without becoming aggressive, which is exactly what you want for long listening sessions.
The Dynamic Damping cabinet
The A2.2 uses an asymmetric rear ported enclosure with Spendor's Dynamic Damping. Rather than simply trying to make a cabinet inert with heavy bracing, Spendor manages the way cabinet energy is dissipated so it does not smear the sound coming from the drivers. The asymmetric internal geometry and rear port work together to deliver clean, tuneful low end from a modest footprint.
At 775 x 165 x 275 mm and 13.5 kg each, this is a genuinely slim tower. It is offered in Black Ash, Dark Walnut, and Natural Oak so you can match it to your room.
Sound Character
The A2.2 has the classic Spendor signature: neutral, articulate, and unfailingly musical. The single EP77 driver gives the midrange a rare directness, so vocals sit right in the room with you and acoustic instruments keep their natural timbre. The LPZ tweeter adds air and fine detail on top without ever sounding etched.
Bass is taut and rhythmic rather than exaggerated. This is a speaker that respects the recording and lets you hear into a mix, which makes it deeply satisfying across every genre from intimate jazz and vocal work to larger orchestral and rock material at sensible levels.
Where It Sits in the Spendor Range
The A2.2 is the entry point to floorstanding sound within Spendor's A line, sharing its EP77 driver technology, LPZ tweeter, and Dynamic Damping cabinet with its larger siblings.
If you have a larger room or want more low end weight and scale, the Spendor A4.2 steps up within the same family, and the Spendor A7.2 goes further still with a larger cabinet and more bass authority. Moving up into the D line, the Spendor D7.2 and Spendor D9.2 add higher resolution driver systems for the most demanding setups.
Those drawn to a different design tradition should note Spendor's Classic line, such as the Spendor Classic 200 and the titanium equipped Spendor Classic 200Ti, which use BBC derived thin wall, lightly damped cabinets and a softer, valve friendly voicing. The A2.2 by contrast is voiced for the crisp, energetic clarity of the modern A line. Both are authentically Spendor; they simply pursue different goals.

With a sensitivity of 86 dB, an 8 ohm nominal impedance, and a recommended amplifier power range of 25 to 150 watts, it is easy to drive with quality integrated amplifiers while still rewarding you as you invest in better electronics.
