The Spendor A-Line at a Glance
Spendor has been hand building loudspeakers in Hailsham, England since 1969, and the A-Line represents the modern face of that tradition. Where the Classic line carries forward the BBC-derived thin-wall, lightly damped cabinets and a softer, valve-friendly voicing, the A-Line takes a more contemporary, resolving approach while keeping the essential Spendor musicality intact.
Every model in this range shares a common set of Spendor engineering ideas, so it helps to understand what they have in common before we compare them.
Shared A-Line Technology
- EP77 polymer cone drivers. The bass and midrange drivers across the A-Line use Spendor's EP77 polymer cone material, chosen for its blend of low coloration and controlled behaviour, which gives the range its clean, natural voice.
- LPZ tweeter. Each model uses the 22mm LPZ (linear pressure zone) tweeter, a design intended to smooth the sound leaving the dome and deliver detailed, open treble without harshness.
- Dynamic Damping cabinets. The A-Line cabinets use Spendor's Dynamic Damping approach with asymmetric rear porting, engineered to manage cabinet energy so the drivers can do their work cleanly.
The result is a family of loudspeakers with a shared sonic signature. As you move up within the A-Line range, the larger models can legitimately offer deeper bass extension, greater scale and higher output capability, which is exactly what you would expect within a single Spendor line.
The Models by Tier
Stand Mount: Spendor A1.2
The Spendor A1.2 is the compact stand mount of the range. It pairs a 150mm EP77 bass and midrange driver with the LPZ tweeter in a small asymmetric rear ported cabinet with Dynamic Damping. With a frequency response of 50 Hz to 25 kHz and a sensitivity of 84 dB, it is designed for near-field and smaller room listening where a full size floorstander would be too much.
This is the model for the listener who wants true Spendor character in a discreet footprint, or who is building a system around a dedicated pair of stands in a study, bedroom or smaller living space.
Compact Floorstanders: Spendor A2.2 and A4.2
The Spendor A2.2 is a slim two way floorstander using a single 180mm EP77 bass and midrange driver with the LPZ tweeter. It reaches down to 40 Hz with a sensitivity of 86 dB, and its narrow cabinet makes it easy to place in real rooms. It suits the listener who wants floorstanding scale and bass without dominating the room.
The Spendor A4.2 shares that slim cabinet width but takes a different design route. It is a three driver, three way design with a dedicated 180mm EP77 bass driver, a separate 150mm EP77 midrange driver and the LPZ tweeter. That dedicated midrange is the key design goal here: it lets the midband breathe independently while the bass driver handles the low end, and it extends response down to 32 Hz with 88 dB sensitivity. The A4.2 suits the listener who prioritises midrange clarity and vocal presence in a slim, room-friendly enclosure.
Flagship Floorstander: Spendor A7.2
The Spendor A7.2 is the largest and most capable model in the range. It is a two way design built around a substantial 180mm EP77 bass and midrange driver and the LPZ tweeter, in the biggest cabinet of the line. It reaches down to 30 Hz, offers 88 dB sensitivity and accepts amplifier power up to 200 watts, giving it the greatest scale, weight and headroom in the A-Line.
This is the choice for larger rooms and for listeners who want the fullest bass foundation and effortless dynamics the range can deliver.
How to Choose
By Room Size
For small rooms, near-field setups and secondary systems, the A1.2 on quality stands is the natural fit. For small to medium rooms where you want a floorstander that will not overwhelm the space, the A2.2 or A4.2 are ideal thanks to their slim cabinets. For medium to larger rooms where you want the fullest low-end extension and scale, the A7.2 is the model to reach for.
By Priority
- Compact footprint above all: A1.2.
- Floorstanding scale in a slim package: A2.2.
- Midrange clarity and vocal focus from a slim cabinet: A4.2, thanks to its dedicated midrange driver.
- Deepest bass, greatest scale and dynamic headroom: A7.2.
By System and Amplification
A loudspeaker needs amplification to make sound, so your amplifier and source matter as much as the speaker itself. The A-Line models are comfortable with a wide range of amplifier power. The A1.2, A2.2 and A4.2 all work happily with amplifiers rated from around 25 to 150 watts, while the A7.2 accepts up to 200 watts, so it welcomes a more powerful amplifier if you want to drive a larger room with authority.
The lower sensitivity of the A1.2 rewards an amplifier with good current delivery and control, while the more sensitive A4.2 and A7.2 are a little easier to bring to life. In every case, aim for a clean, well matched integrated amplifier or amplifier and source combination whose capability is in keeping with the loudspeaker, so the system stays balanced from front to back.
