Why the Right REL Cable Matters
A subwoofer cable is not an afterthought with REL. The way you feed signal to a REL sub-bass system determines how it integrates with your room, your speakers, and the kind of listening you do most. A cable or connector makes no sound on its own. It serves a specific compatible REL subwoofer, so the goal of this guide is simple: help you match the correct connection to your setup.
REL offers three distinct connection philosophies, and each has a dedicated cable in this lineup. Understanding those philosophies first makes the choice obvious.
The Shared REL Design Language
REL builds sub-bass systems engineered to integrate with your full range speakers, whether you listen to two channel music, watch films, or both. Three signal paths make that possible.
- High Level. REL's signature connection. A cable is taken from your power amplifier's speaker terminals so the subwoofer receives the same amplified signal and tonal character as your main speakers. This is the path prized for seamless music integration.
- Low Level. A line level interconnect for sources that provide a preamp or line output.
- LFE / .1. The dedicated home theater path, where your AV processor or receiver sends the low frequency effects channel straight to the subwoofer for cinematic slam.
The cables below are simply the highest quality expressions of these paths, terminated correctly for REL subwoofers.
The Music Tier: High Level Connection
REL Bassline Blue High Level
The REL Bassline Blue High Level is the music lover's cable. It carries the high level connection from your main amplifier's speaker terminals to the REL's Speakon input, using a three conductor design (positive left, positive right, and ground). The amplifier end terminates in bare wire or spade style leads for your speaker terminals, and the subwoofer end uses the locking Speakon connector.
Because this path delivers the same amplified signal your main speakers see, it is the connection engineered for tonal continuity and that sense of the subwoofer disappearing into the soundstage. If your priority is two channel music, and your REL subwoofer is equipped with a high level Speakon input, this is the cable to reach for. Confirm your model has the high level input before ordering.
Best for: Two channel and music first systems, floorstanders or bookshelf speakers paired with a T/x, Classic, S, or Reference series REL that accepts high level input.
The Home Theater Tier: Dedicated LFE Cables
When your subwoofer is anchoring a multichannel system, the low frequency effects channel comes from your AV processor or receiver's subwoofer output. REL offers two shielded LFE cables for this job.
REL Commodore
The REL Commodore is a dedicated .1/LFE connection cable with RCA terminations, carrying the low frequency effects channel from your receiver or processor to a REL subwoofer that has a dedicated .1/LFE input. It is a clean, purpose built choice for building out a home theater bass path.
REL Commander
The REL Commander serves the same LFE role, running from your AV processor or receiver subwoofer output to the REL .1/LFE RCA input, with shielded construction for low noise. Both cables are engineered for the same dedicated home theater task, so the decision here comes down to the length and run you need and how you want to dress the cable in your installation. Reach out and we can help you pick the right one for your rack to subwoofer distance.
Best for: Home theater and multichannel systems, especially REL HT series subwoofers optimized for LFE slam, or any REL with a dedicated .1/LFE input that you are running from a processor.
The Multi Sub Tier: Line Array Connection
REL Bassline Blue Line Array Connector
Two or more RELs can be stacked in a vertical line array for greater output and a larger soundstage. The REL Bassline Blue Line Array Connector, sold as a matched pair, links two REL subwoofers together using the high level connection derived from the main amplifier. This is the cable that turns a single REL into a coherent stack.
A line array is worth considering when a single subwoofer is fully integrated but your room is large, your speakers are demanding, or you simply want more effortless scale and headroom. Both subwoofers must be equipped with the high level input to use this connector.
Best for: Larger rooms and enthusiasts building a two sub stacked array on the high level connection.
Which Should You Buy, By Scenario
Music first, one subwoofer
Choose the REL Bassline Blue High Level so your sub sees the same amplified signal as your speakers. Confirm your REL has the Speakon high level input.
Home theater, one subwoofer
Choose the REL Commodore or the REL Commander to carry the .1/LFE channel from your processor. Both do the same job, so let us help you match the run length and layout to your room.
Large room or a demanding two channel system, two subwoofers
Add the REL Bassline Blue Line Array Connector to stack a pair of high level equipped RELs for greater output and a bigger soundstage.
Music and movies in one system
Many owners run the high level path for music and the LFE path for film, depending on the subwoofer's inputs. Pair the Bassline Blue High Level with a Commodore or Commander and let the connection you choose follow the source you are listening to. We are glad to confirm exactly which inputs your REL model supports.
