PrimaLuna EVO Tube Integrated Amplifier Buying Guide

The PrimaLuna EVO line has become one of the easiest recommendations we make at All Elite Audio, and for good reason. These are hand built, point to point wired tube integrated amplifiers that deliver the warmth, dimensionality, and ease that tube lovers chase, without the fuss that used to come with owning a tube amp. Adaptive AutoBias means you never touch a bias meter, and the Bad Tube Indicator tells you exactly which tube needs attention if one ever does. That combination lets you enjoy the sound and skip the maintenance anxiety.

All four models in the EVO integrated family share the same EL34 push pull heart, the same ALPS Blue Velvet volume control, wide bandwidth output transformers, and a potted toroidal power transformer. What changes as you move up the line is power, control flexibility, operating modes, and internal parts quality. This guide walks through each one so you can match it to your speakers and your room with confidence.

What all four EVO integrateds have in common

Every EVO integrated uses a quartet or octet of EL34 output tubes in push pull, driven by small signal tubes, and every one offers 4 and 8 ohm speaker taps, a tape output, and a quarter inch headphone jack. All of them accept an optional moving magnet phonostage, so a turntable can join the system now or later. Silver and black finishes are available across the range, and each ships with a remote. Because they are tube amplifiers, they all pair especially well with higher efficiency speakers, and they all reward good source components with genuinely holographic imaging.

PrimaLuna EVO 100: the elegant entry point

The PrimaLuna EVO 100 delivers 40 watts per channel from four EL34 tubes, with a 12AX7 and 12AU7 driver complement. It offers four RCA inputs, a tape output, and a headphone jack, all controlled with a slim remote. At 39.6 pounds and 11 inches wide, it is the most compact and approachable member of the family.

This is the model for a listener building a first serious tube system, or for a smaller room where 40 watts is plenty. Paired with efficient speakers it sings, and the classic EL34 voice comes through with lovely tone and presence. If you want to keep things simple and elegant, the EVO 100 is a very satisfying place to begin.

Best for

Small to medium rooms, first tube amplifier, listeners who value a clean and compact package with efficient speakers.

PrimaLuna EVO 200: home theater friendly and a step up in mass

The PrimaLuna EVO 200 moves to 44 watts per channel with four EL34 tubes and a fully 12AU7 driver stage. The headline feature here is the home theater bypass, which lets the EVO 200 slot into a surround system so your front left and right channels get tube magic while the rest of your processor handles the room. It carries four RCA inputs plus that dedicated bypass input, and at 52.8 pounds it is noticeably more substantial than the EVO 100.

If you run a combined two channel and home theater setup, the EVO 200 is the logical starting point. You get the tube sound for music and seamless integration for movies, all in one chassis.

Best for

Listeners who want one amplifier for both music and a home theater front stage, medium rooms with efficient to moderately efficient speakers.

PrimaLuna EVO 300: triode versus ultralinear and premium parts

The PrimaLuna EVO 300 is where the line takes a meaningful leap. It still uses four EL34 tubes for 42 watts per channel, but it adds switchable triode and ultralinear operation, five RCA inputs, a home theater bypass, a subwoofer output with stereo and mono options, and full remote control. Internally it steps up to premium Swiss wire, an AC Offset Killer, and Takman resistors, and it weighs 68.2 pounds.

Triode mode trades a little power for an even more delicate, liquid, and intimate presentation, ideal for acoustic music and vocals at moderate volume. Ultralinear mode gives you more grip and drive when you want scale and dynamics. Being able to choose from the remote is a genuine pleasure, and the subwoofer output makes it easy to extend low end response in rooms that need it.

Best for

The listener who wants flexibility, both operating modes, better internal parts, and a subwoofer output, in a medium to larger room.

PrimaLuna EVO 400: the power and refinement flagship of the integrateds

The PrimaLuna EVO 400 shares the EVO 300 feature set, triode and ultralinear switching, five inputs, home theater bypass, subwoofer output, premium Swiss wire, AC Offset Killer, and Takman resistors, but doubles the output tube count to eight EL34s. The result is 70 watts per channel, the most powerful integrated in the EVO family, in the same 68.2 pound chassis.

That extra power matters. It gives the EVO 400 the authority to drive more demanding or less efficient speakers, to fill a larger room, and to hold its composure on complex, dynamic music. You still get to choose triode for intimacy or ultralinear for full muscle, but now with a bigger reserve behind it. If you want the most capable EVO integrated and expect to keep it for the long term, this is it.

Best for

Larger rooms, more demanding speakers, listeners who want maximum headroom and the most flexible flagship integrated in the line.

Matching EVO amps to speakers and rooms

Tube amplifiers, and EL34 designs in particular, love high efficiency speakers. High sensitivity designs such as Klipsch Heritage models let even the 40 watt EVO 100 play effortlessly loud with tremendous dynamic ease, and they make triode mode on the EVO 300 and 400 truly shine. If your speakers are less efficient or your room is large, lean toward the EVO 400 for its 70 watts and extra headroom. The 4 and 8 ohm taps on every model let you optimize the match, and the subwoofer output on the EVO 300 and 400 gives you a clean way to reinforce the low end when a room calls for it.
