The short answer
The Luxman L-509Z is Luxman's flagship integrated amplifier, rated at 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 220 watts per channel into 4 ohms. It is the first Luxman component to use the LIFES feedback engine in both the preamplifier and power amplifier sections at once, with the new LECUA-EX volume control, a 600VA EI transformer, and a built in MM/MC phono stage.
Owners and reviewers describe an amplifier that is dead silent, effortlessly powerful, and transparent to the source, with build quality that stands next to the finest separates. The L-509Z is $14,495 at All Elite Audio, an authorized Luxman dealer in Timonium, Maryland.
What is the Luxman L-509Z?
The L-509Z is the flagship of Luxman's Z series and the successor to the L-509X, launched in 2023. Luxman calls the design concept "single chassis separates": preamplifier and power amplifier sections engineered to the standard of separate components, sharing one chassis. It is a Class AB design, hand built in Japan, and it carries the weight to prove it at 29.4 kg.
The headline change from the X series is LIFES 1.0, the Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System. LIFES succeeds ODNF, the Only Distortion Negative Feedback circuit Luxman introduced in 1999 and refined through five generations, with redesigned distortion detection, regulation, and thermal stability. The L-509Z is the first Luxman to run LIFES in the preamp and power amp sections simultaneously, in independent modules for each.
Around that core sits a traditional high inertia power supply: a custom 600VA EI transformer with high regulation and eight newly developed 10,000uF block capacitors. The output stage uses bipolar transistors in a four parallel push pull arrangement, in three stage Darlington configuration, for a damping factor of 330.
Volume is handled by LECUA-EX, Luxman's electronically controlled attenuator, which steps through fixed value resistors for each channel independently across 88 fine steps, paired with a weighted rotary encoder for a precise, mechanical knob feel. A seven segment LED volume readout sits between the two white lit VU meters.
On the feature side, the L-509Z includes a built in MM/MC phono stage with switchable high and low moving coil gain, three band tone controls for bass, middle, and treble plus loudness, a Line Straight bypass, a Separate function for using the preamp and power amp sections independently, A and B speaker outputs, 12V triggers, and both 6.3mm and 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced headphone jacks. The RA-17A aluminum remote handles the rest.

What it sounds like, in owners' words
Reviewer Steve Huff summed up the Luxman house sound after living with the L-509Z for a month, and the line keeps getting repeated because owners hear the same thing:
"Luxman is alive, punchy, open and crisp with solid bass and a big sound that brings a hint of warmth in the midband."
Steve Huff, "The Luxman 509 Z Review. Luxman's Best Ever?"
Stereophile's Herb Reichert was struck first by the scale of the presentation. In his words, the L-509Z produced "large, dense, spatially profound" images, "nearly life sized portrayals of musicians, vocalists, and the ambient space in which they were captured," with "brilliant purity and fluid communication" from the upper mids through the treble. His summary of the character of the amp is worth quoting in full:
"Beyond its bass to midrange neutrality and super pure, upper tier clarity, the L-509Z had no obvious signature. It was largely music and equipment agnostic."
Stereophile, Luxman L-509Z review, February 2024
That neutrality is paired with an unusually quiet background. Huff wrote that the amp is "100% absolutely dead silent. Zero hum or buzzing here," adding that "the music emerges from blackness." Stereophile's measurements backed the impression up, calling the L-509Z "beyond quiet."
An owner on the AVForums discussion thread, who has lived with the 509Z for a while, put the everyday experience simply: "it plays all genres with effortless control and beautiful transparency." Huff heard the same effortlessness in the power delivery, noting "an effortless way that it delivers power" and "an open window to whatever is on the recording."
Five things owners and reviewers praise
-
1 Build quality like a Swiss watch
Steve Huff pulled his $94,000 Nagra separates out of the system for the L-509Z and was blunt about the fit and finish:
"Before I get to what happened when I turned it all on, I must give credit to Luxman for the all out beauty and build quality of the 509Z. It is truly in every way built like a Swiss watch and just as well as my Nagra components, if not better. It is the finest built Luxman I have ever encountered."
Steve HuffAVForums' Ed Selley agreed, writing that "saying the Luxman is 'well built' is wandering around in the foothills of where this thing actually is."
-
2 Dead silent backgrounds
Huff put his ear to the chassis and heard nothing: "100% absolutely dead silent. Zero hum or buzzing here as Luxman has went to great lengths with this model to eliminate any and all noise." Stereophile called it "beyond quiet," and the payoff, in Huff's words, is that "the music emerges from blackness," so "details emerge from darkness."
-
3 Effortless power across every genre
The long term owner on AVForums confirmed Ed Selley's review and added: "it plays all genres with effortless control and beautiful transparency." Huff described "an effortless way that it delivers power," and a HiFi Report listening session found the amp never needed high volume to resolve every instrument, with "excellent" dynamics and a "calm and solid" low end under the music.
-
4 A real step up from the L-509X
On the Audioholics forum, an owner who traded the previous flagship for the new one was direct: "I had a 509X that i traded for a 509Z. Its a great upgrade." The Z generation brings LIFES 1.0 and LECUA-EX, both firsts on a Luxman integrated, plus the new MM/MC phono stage and three band tone controls.
-
5 A phono stage that embarrasses most built ins
Stereophile's Reichert wrote: "I was impressed with the Luxman phono stage," noting its "serious clarity and drive" next to a tubed Manley Chinook. An Audiogon owner found "the MC specs of the 509Z are almost a perfect match for the Cadenza" on his Ortofon Cadenza Blue. HiFi Report, comparing it against the built in stages of other integrated amps tried, called it "undoubtedly the best."
The features, named by name
Owners and reviewers keep returning to the same hardware. These are the features they call out by name:
- LIFES 1.0. The Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System, running in independent modules for the preamp and power amp sections. It succeeds ODNF, the Only Distortion Negative Feedback circuit Luxman refined through five generations starting in 1999, with improved distortion detection, regulation, and thermal stability.
- LECUA-EX volume control. Luxman's electronically controlled attenuator steps through fixed value resistors for each channel independently across 88 fine steps, paired with a weighted rotary encoder. No conventional volume pot, no channel tracking error.
- MM/MC phono stage with switchable high and low moving coil gain, a genuine upgrade over the X series and a standout in reviews.
- 600VA EI custom transformer with eight newly developed 10,000uF block capacitors in a high inertia power supply.
- Four parallel push pull bipolar output stage in three stage Darlington configuration, for a damping factor of 330.
- Three band tone controls for bass, middle, and treble, plus loudness, all bypassable with Line Straight. Huff notes the tone controls "will not alter the sound signature or reduce the imaging performance."
- Dual white lit VU meters with a seven segment LED volume readout between them, dimmable from the remote.
- 4.4mm Pentaconn balanced headphone jack alongside the standard 6.3mm jack, with independent left and right grounding for better channel separation.
- Separate function. Split the preamp and power amp sections to use the L-509Z as a preamp into an external power amp, or as a power amp from an external preamp.
- A and B speaker outputs with heavy binding posts that accept spade lugs or banana plugs, ready for a second pair or bi wiring.
- RA-17A aluminum remote control, front panel mute button, and 12V triggers for system integration.

"The Luxman 509 Z Review. Luxman's Best Ever?"
Huff put the L-509Z in against his $94,000 Nagra separates and came away calling it the finest built Luxman he has ever encountered, dead silent, and alive, punchy, open, and crisp. His written review carries the full month of listening notes.

"Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier Review: Is It Worth 11,000 Pounds?"
AVForums Hi-Fi editor Ed Selley's video review walks through the build, the engineering detail, and the performance, and concludes the Luxman feels built to last a lifetime. A long term owner in the review's discussion thread confirmed: "you were spot on with everything you praised about it."
Watch on AVForumsHonest criticisms
Every reviewer and owner we read praised the L-509Z, but the praise comes with real caveats, and they are worth knowing before you listen.
No DAC or streaming inside
The L-509Z is a fully analog integrated amplifier: RCA, XLR, phono, and main in only. There is no digital input and no network streaming, so digital sources need an external DAC or streamer. Budget the shelf space and the extra box if your system is digital first.
Unforgiving of poor recordings and weak sources
Transparency cuts both ways. The long term AVForums owner warns it "can be a bit unforgiving with poor source equipment or bad recordings." Stereophile put it the same way from the review bench: the Luxman gives "a clear view of the accompanying equipment." Feed it well mastered music from a quality source and it is brilliant; feed it a harsh 1980s CD and you will hear exactly what is on it.
It is heavy
At 29.4 kg, about 65 lb, the L-509Z is a two person lift. Plan a sturdy rack with ventilation room before it arrives, and measure the 463 mm depth against your shelf.
Not for listeners who want tube coloration
Stereophile found his tubed references "tonally sweeter" than the Luxman; the L-509Z is about clarity, balance, and neutrality. As the AVForums owner put it: "If you prefer a particular coloration to the sound, then it's definitely not for you." If your taste runs to romantic warmth, audition carefully or look at Luxman's Class A models instead.
