Gauder Akustik Buying Guide: ARCONA and CAPELLO Loudspeakers

Why Gauder Akustik

Gauder Akustik is a German high-end loudspeaker maker led by Roland Gauder, a designer with a very specific and consistent philosophy. Gauder builds only passive loudspeakers, and every model in the range shares the same engineering ideas expressed at different levels of ambition. If you value a coherent, phase-accurate presentation that lets voices and instruments sit in a stable, believable space, Gauder is a name worth knowing. As an authorized Gauder Akustik dealer, we want to walk you through what makes these speakers distinctive and how to choose the right one.

The Signature: An Ultra-Steep Symmetrical Crossover

The heart of every Gauder design is the crossover. Where many loudspeakers use gentle filter slopes that let neighboring drivers overlap across a wide band, Gauder uses an ultra-steep symmetrical crossover on the order of about 50dB per octave. The goal is phase accuracy and minimal overlap between drivers.

Why minimal overlap matters

When two drivers reproduce the same frequencies at the same time, their outputs combine in the air. Because each driver radiates from a slightly different point and behaves differently at the edges of its range, that overlap can smear timing and blur the way a note starts and stops. A very steep, symmetrical filter hands off from one driver to the next quickly and cleanly, so each driver works in the band it does best and the overlap region is kept short. The intended result is better phase behavior, a more focused image, and a sound that stays composed on complex material. This is the thread that runs through the entire Gauder catalog.

The Drop-Shaped Cabinet

Gauder houses its drivers in a drop-shaped cabinet built from 22mm MDF. The tapered, non-parallel form is chosen to manage internal standing waves and reduce the cabinet's own contribution to the sound. The speakers use WBT terminals and offer adjustable bass so you can tune the low end to your room. It is a purposeful piece of engineering rather than styling for its own sake.

XPulse Cone Drivers

Both ranges AEA carries use XPulse cone drivers. These cones are engineered for low coloration and fast, controlled response, which complements the steep crossover philosophy. The way the tweeter is handled is one of the main differences between the two lines, as you will see below.

The Two Ranges AEA Carries

ARCONA MKII SD

The ARCONA MKII SD line pairs XPulse cone bass and midrange drivers with a silk soft-dome tweeter. The soft dome is designed for a smooth, easy top end, and the line is a natural entry point into the Gauder sound. The range covers a range of room sizes and system types.

  • Gauder Arcona 40 MKII SD is the stand mount model, well suited to smaller rooms and near-field or apartment-scale listening. As a stand mount it needs the matching Gauder aluminum stands to perform and image as intended.
  • Gauder Arcona 60 MKII SD is the most compact floorstander, a good fit for small to medium rooms where you want full-range sound without a large footprint.
  • Gauder Arcona 80 MKII SD steps up in scale for medium rooms and more demanding listening.
  • Gauder Arcona 100 MKII SD is the largest floorstander in the line, designed for larger rooms where you want the fullest ARCONA presentation.
  • Gauder Arcona Center MKII SD lets you extend the ARCONA voice to a home theater or multichannel setup with a tonally matched center channel.

CAPELLO and the DV Double Vision Versions

The CAPELLO line sits above ARCONA and reflects a higher level of ambition. It uses XPulse cone drivers paired with an aluminum tweeter that is upgradeable to beryllium, and it adds Time Delay Control for the aligned, phase-focused presentation Gauder is known for.

The DV suffix stands for Double Vision. A DV version adds upgraded Mundorf crossover parts, premium internal wiring, and WBT terminals with rhodium bi-wiring bridges. To be clear, DV means Double Vision. It does not mean a diamond tweeter, and no Gauder model here uses a diamond tweeter.

  • Gauder Capello 40 DV is the CAPELLO stand mount, offering the higher line's aluminum tweeter and Double Vision components in a compact form. Like all stand mounts it needs the matching Gauder aluminum stands.
  • Gauder Capello 80 DV is a floorstander for medium to larger rooms where you want the CAPELLO's resolution and scale.
  • Gauder Capello 100 DV is the larger CAPELLO floorstander, at home in bigger rooms and more ambitious systems. Within the CAPELLO range a higher model like the 100 DV can legitimately offer more scale and low-end authority than the 80 DV.
  • Gauder Capello Center DV brings the CAPELLO voice to a matched center channel for a high-end multichannel front stage.

ARCONA or CAPELLO: How to Think About the Choice

The two ranges are not simply better and worse. They are built around the same core ideas with different design goals. The ARCONA MKII SD line, with its silk soft-dome tweeter, is aimed at listeners who want the Gauder crossover philosophy and cabinet in an approachable, smooth-voiced package that works beautifully across a wide range of rooms. The CAPELLO line, with its aluminum tweeter that is upgradeable to beryllium, Time Delay Control, and the Double Vision component upgrades, is aimed at listeners chasing the last increment of resolution, transient speed, and refinement, especially in more resolving systems.

Within a single Gauder range, moving up the model numbers generally brings more bass extension, more output, and larger scale, which is why room size is such a useful guide.

Matching by Room Size

For small rooms and near-field setups, a stand mount such as the Arcona 40 MKII SD or the Capello 40 DV can be ideal, remembering the required Gauder aluminum stands. For small to medium rooms, the Arcona 60 MKII SD is a natural first floorstander. For medium rooms, look to the Arcona 80 MKII SD or the Capello 80 DV. For larger rooms, the Arcona 100 MKII SD or the Capello 100 DV deliver the fullest presentation. For home theater, pair front floorstanders with the matching Arcona Center MKII SD or Capello Center DV from the same line for tonal consistency.

Amplification and Stands

Gauder makes no amplifiers or electronics, so every one of these passive loudspeakers needs a separate amplifier scaled to its level. A modest speaker deserves a clean, capable amplifier, and a more ambitious CAPELLO deserves a more serious one. Matching the amplifier to both the speaker and the room is where a lot of the final magic happens, and it is worth getting right rather than guessing.

The stand mount models, the Arcona 40 MKII SD and Capello 40 DV, also need the matching Gauder aluminum stands. The stands are part of the design, positioning the tweeter correctly and providing the rigid foundation these speakers expect.
