The E-280 is Accuphase's entry point into their renowned integrated amplifier lineup, hand-built in Yokohama, Japan, and delivering the brand's hallmark craftsmanship and circuit refinement at a more accessible level. The power amplifier section uses bipolar transistors in a double parallel push-pull configuration, configured as an instrumentation amplifier, producing 90 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 120 watts per channel into 4 ohms. A high damping factor of 500 ensures firm, authoritative control over any speaker load, while the current feedback amplification topology and low-impedance output design work together to bring out the full potential of connected speakers.
At the heart of the preamplifier section is Accuphase's proprietary AAVA (Analog Vari-gain Amplifier) volume control, which eliminates all variable resistors from the signal path entirely — using 16 V-I converter circuits with varying gain to maintain an optimal signal-to-noise ratio of 107dB across the entire volume range. The E-280's AAVA implementation uses maximum gain in four parallel rows and secondary V-I converter circuits in two parallel rows, doubling output current capability and halving circuit impedance for lower noise than its predecessors. Logic-controlled relays ensure the shortest possible signal paths, MOS-FET switches handle speaker protection, and two expansion slots accept optional add-on boards such as a DAC or phono module for expanded functionality.
